It’s an incredible island – full of contrasts – the black bleak volcanic interior that resembles a lunar landscape and then these incredible splashes of colour.

The hard sharp angular relief of lava fields suddenly leads to long soft luscious sand dunes.

Then the soft sand suddenly gives way again to cold hard black beach pebbles.

Village of Division 33, Firestone Reserve, Montserrado, Liberia

One Wednesday in late June I was clearing up the studio from a shoot when the phone rang. It was Save The Children asking if I was available to shoot their Born To Shine campaign in Liberia. Barely 2 hours later I was sitting in Interhealth having all sorts of jabs in both arms.

Unpredictability – that’s what I love about being a photographer!

The aim of the trip was to raise awareness of the number of children dying from treatable diseases – particularly pneumonia, malaria and diarrhea in order to raise money for Save The Children to carry on their fantastic work in providing medical care and support in rural areas of Liberia.

We heard some desperately sad stories and witnessed some tough events, none more so than Jacob who arrived with his aunt off the back of a motorbike as we were filming.

Jacob was suffering from convulsions, fever, anemia and malaria and was clearly in a serious state.

Later that day his father arrived to give Jacob a blood transfusion in a bid to save his child’s life.

Tragically Jacob passed away. We were fortunate enough to be invited by his family to the funeral the following day, which was a true privilege, as despite everything that they were going through, they were incredibly understanding of why we were there and the important work of Save The Children in making sure that we learn from these tragic events.
